The Mankato City Council has approved an additional $11.5 million in federal funding for construction of an air traffic control tower at Mankato Regional Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration announced the grant Monday, with the city facing a Thursday deadline to execute the funding agreement.
The latest award brings total federal funding for the project to more than $28 million, putting the tower project at about 94 percent funded.
City Manager Susan Arntz says city staff have been working on the project since 2017, with a formal funding request submitted in 2021.
Officials say Mankato Regional Airport is one of the busiest airports in Minnesota without an air traffic control tower and is also home to aviation students at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
