A 103-year-old building in Mankato is now officially recognized as a historic site, following the unveiling of a new plaque at Lincoln Community School.

Mankato Area Public Schools partnered with the Blue Earth County Historical Society to install the marker, the 19th in Mankato’s historic plaque series.

The project began in 2018 ahead of the school’s centennial in 2023, but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and manufacturing backlogs.

The building has served as an elementary school, a temporary high school during construction of West High, a community center, and now Lincoln Community School.

The plaque also highlights the building’s connection to author Maud Hart Lovelace.

Historical Society Executive Director Jessia Potter says the school has long been an anchor for the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

Organizers say the plaque honors the building’s history while recognizing its continued role in serving the community.
