The North Mankato City Council has approved a one-year moratorium on new data centers, allowing the city time to study their potential impacts.
The council held a public hearing Monday, September 21st, more than a month after initially hearing from residents about the proposal.
Four residents spoke at Monday’s hearing, all in favor of the moratorium. One resident urged the council to provide regular updates and maintain transparency during the study.
The moratorium pauses consideration and construction of new data centers for up to 12 months, with the option to extend it for another year.
During that time, the council plans to study the local impacts of data centers and examine how other communities regulate the facilities.
