A violent, multi-vehicle crash in Oxnard on Thursday afternoon that left two people dead at the scene began with the driver of a pick-up truck running a red light, triggering a series of collisions. Traffic investigators believe that speed and impairment by alcohol and/or drugs were contributing factors to the crash.
Fire department crews and police officers responded to the deadly collision at Doris and Victoria avenues around 3:55 p.m.
The Oxnard Police Department said eight vehicles were involved, with the driver of a 2018 GMC Sierra pickup running a red light while traveling northbound on Doris Avenue.
The pickup truck collided with a Honda Civic and a Toyota Avalon, both traveling westbound through the intersection at a green light.
The crash forced the Toyota Avalon north onto Victoria Avenue and into a Southern California Edison pole on the center median.
Both drivers of the Honda Civic and Toyota Avalon, ages 31 and 58, were trapped inside their vehicles. Police said they were residents of Oxnard and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The 29-year-old driver of the GMC pickup has been identified as David Mora, a Santa Paula resident.
Several other vehicles lined the road with varying degrees of damage. Police said four vehicles in all had major damage.
Four people were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries. The police investigation is ongoing.
