GARY, Ind. — A woman died Sunday morning after her SUV collided with a semi-truck and overturned on Interstate 80/94 in Lake County, according to police.

Indiana State Police responded to the crash at approximately 8:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near the 7-mile marker, close to Burr Street.

Upon arrival, troopers found a 2016 Lincoln SUV overturned on its driver’s side in a ditch. Police say the impact threw the driver from the vehicle. While she was initially conscious and spoke with paramedics at the scene, her condition worsened after she was taken to the hospital. She died a short time later.

Investigators say an eastbound semi-truck struck the rear passenger side of the Lincoln with its front tire. The collision caused the Lincoln to spin and the driver to lose control before the vehicle rolled into the ditch.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office expects to release the woman’s identity Monday morning following positive identification and family notification.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation as troopers work to determine how the crash happened.
